WHO ARE DOC STEVENS
& MARILYN? Doc Stevens and his niece Marilyn are
rural American country blues roots
musicians. They
play old school Delta,
Hill Country, and Piedmont blues, as
well as country and gospel music from
Doc’s boyhood in southern Virginia.
They have an incredibly full sound, and
steady driving beat thanks to Doc’s
homemade and modified guitars and his
stompbox made from
a fruit crate and tambourine. They do both
acoustic and
electric shows. Both of them are powerful
singers, due to years of playing as
street musicians, busking for money for food
and shelter.
Marilyn’s harp playing sounds like someone
far beyond her years, and her singing seems
too loud and powerful to come from such a
little body! You need to hear their heartfelt
gospel, country and blues roots songs– nothing newer
than the late fifties,
as far as we can tell.
